Planting a Vegetable Garden – 5 Tips For Success

by admin

Planting a vegetable garden can be a fun and exciting spring ritual. For most, the annual hope for a great growing season is high as is the desire to provide fresh vegetables for the family. Planting a vegetable garden does not have to be difficult. Here are five tips to help you be successful this season.

1. Plan for rotation. Crops from the same family such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and potatoes should be properly rotated throughout your garden space. Disease buildup can occur if you always plant your tomatoes in the same location each year. Try to rotate locations in your garden based on plant family over a three year cycle. As an example, you should avoid planting melons in the same area you planted cucumbers over the last two seasons.
2. Don’t plant too close to others. All too often, when planting a vegetable garden, home gardeners will not take into consideration the final height or width of a mature plant by grouping plants too close together. This makes harvesting and other tasks more difficult and can lead to poor yields.
3. Water properly. Proper watering of a vegetable garden at all stages from newly planted seeds to harvest is important for success. Seeds must be kept moist to germinate properly. As you move closer to harvesting problems can arise at the other end of the spectrum such as splitting tomatoes due to over watering.
4. Provide support to those in need. What I’m referring to here is a group of plants that cannot support themselves in the vegetable garden. Tomatoes are the classic example. Providing cages or stakes to keep the plants off the ground will help prevent diseases and even rodent damage. Other vegetables that benefit from support include cucumbers, eggplant, peas, and some peppers.
5. Mulching. This tip as well as the last one refers more to post planting processes. However, they can be implemented at planting especially if you are using transplants. Mulching materials come in many forms ranging from plastic to wheat straw. A properly mulched vegetable garden will have fewer weeds, cooler soil (unless you are using plastics), and overall better plant health.

Planting a vegetable garden can be quite rewarding and satisfying. Not only are you able to watch the miracle of nature’s growth, you are also providing healthy food for your family. With a little care and a few tips from fellow gardeners, you are sure to have a successful vegetable garden.
